Two powerful movies that illustrate the importance of faith and virtue in leading a good life.

One, “Mother Teresa,” tells the life story of one of the world’s best-known and most admired women, and “End of the Spear” is the story of five American missionaries to the Waodani Indians of the Ecuadorian jungles.

Mother Teresa was an Albanian-born nun who founded the Missionaries of Charity. Called “The Angel of Mercy,” many people considered her the embodiment of a living saint. Her work among the poverty-stricken of Calcutta made her one of the world’s most famous people. She founded her order in 1950 to care for those she called “the hungry, the naked, the homeless, the crippled, the blind, the lepers, all those people who feel unwanted, unloved, uncared for throughout society, people that have become a burden to the society and are shunned by everyone.”

Golden Globe-winner Olivia Hussey illuminates the holy woman’s life story in “Mother Teresa,” a DVD feature from Fox Home Entertainment. A shrewd diplomat and an indomitable force, Mother Teresa was unwilling to accept what others deemed impossible, fearlessly fighting for the unloved and the forgotten.

In 1956, a small band of missionaries sought to enlighten the cannibal tribes of darkest Ecuador, but for their compassion, they were mercilessly slain. Years later, the wives of the fallen men returned to the village to continue their husbands’ missionary work, bringing their children to live amongst the tribesmen in the hope that through their forgiveness the natives might find faith.

Now director Jim Hanon tells this remarkable true story of fear, faith and forgiveness in “End of the Spear,” based on the book “Through Gates of Splendor” by Elisabeth Elliot, the widow of one of the missionaries.

The movie tells the story of the Waodani warrior Mincayani, who kills Steve Saint’s father and four other missionaries. Steve returns to the Waodani as an adult and encounters Mincayani; together they confront the meaning of the life and death of Steve’s father and the other men who were killed. Through Mincayani, Steve comes to forgive; through Steve, Mincayani comes to understand the lessons of the Bible and a path to a virtuous life.

The 1950s were arguably the golden age of television and many people of a certain age look back fondly at some of the shows of the time – “The Lone Ranger”, “I Love Lucy” and “Gunsmoke”. These shows were in black and white and were watched on a set that got its signal from a huge antenna on the roof, but they were loved just the same.

Almost as compelling as the TV shows themselves, were some of the commercials of the time. TV was still a novelty during the 1950s and companies were anxious to cash in on the new craze. Particularly popular were commercials for cigarettes, cars and state of the art kitchen appliances. And the average length of TV advertisements was around a minute – compared to the 30 seconds or less today.

Beer was also one of the products widely advertised on TV during the 1950s. At first, it was only late at night and never on a Sunday, so as not to offend anyone. During the early part of the decade, Blatz Beer became one of the beer industry’s biggest advertisers, partly due to the company’s sponsorship of the popular “Amos ‘n’ Andy” show.

One of the most instantly recognizable characters in television advertising at the time was Mabel. Mabel was a chirpy blond waitress who appeared on screen with a tray of Carling Black Label beer. Almost every Carling commercial featured the phrase that became famous – “Hey, Mabel, Black Label!”

Cigarette advertisements were commonplace during the 1950s – a big change from television today. Some of the biggest tobacco manufacturers of the time spent a lot of money trying to convince us that smoking was sophisticated and fun, including Lucky Strike, Tareyton and Winston.

One famous Lucky Strike ad featured a clever combination of cartoon and live action, featuring the singer Gisele McKenzie. Tareytown had an ad that featured what appeared to be two children dancing around a giant pack of cigarettes. And who can possibly forget the Fontane Sisters singing the praises of Chesterfield cigarettes?

Car manufacturers went to great lengths to advertise the latest models on television during the 1950s despite the loss of aesthetic effect on a black and white screen. The Ford Edsel was advertised at great length as the most beautiful convertible in the world, complete with such wonderful and innovative features as “teletouch” driving and air suspension.

It wasn’t all just cars, beer and tobacco. Some healthier products were advertised as well. One of the most well known ads of the era was for Pepsodent toothpaste. The TV ad featured a cute cartoon couple kissing after having brushed their teeth, and the catchy and unforgettable slogan – “You’ll wonder where the yellow went, when you brush your teeth with Pepsodent!”

TV advertisements for kitchen appliances pointed out features that we now take for granted. A General Electric ad from the time for a new refrigerator consisted of a proud couple explaining the features of their sleek new fridge which included shelves that slid out, storage space behind the door and a separate freezer compartment.

And some things don’t seem to have changed much over the years. Tupperware ran a series of TV ads during the 1950s which featured an exciting Tupperware evening at a typical suburban home, organized by a “hostess”. Almost as much emphasis was placed on the social aspect, as on the actual features of the product.

One of the most prolific TV advertisers during the 1950s and subsequent decades was Pepsi. Their advertisements captured the feeling of the times like few others. One of the company’s earliest featured the actress and singer Polly Bergen enjoying a barn dance and a refreshing glass of Pepsi-Cola.

Not to be outdone, Coca-Cola was just as prolific with their ads and came up with several memorable slogans, such as “There’s nothing like a Coke”. Coca-Cola also went after the young crowd, with an ad featuring people at diners and drive-in movie theaters and a jingle that claimed “Zing! What a feeling!”

Many television viewers firmly maintain that the advertisements are just as good as the actual shows themselves! It seems as though that was especially true back in the 1950s. And if you just can’t get enough of those old commercials, you can enjoy some of them on DVD or online.

~ Ben Anton, 2008

The movie industry always comes with fantastic movies each year to fulfill the demand of movie lovers.

Online DVD rental is very popular right now for many reasons. Convenience, choice, and cost are only a few of those reasons. Some people still haven’t gotten in on it yet for one reason or another, but it is probably due to plain old common misconceptions.

One misconception that people have about online DVD rental is that it is way too complicated. Online DVD rental isn’t complicated. All you have to know how to do is use your mailbox and navigate a mouse. All you really need to do is pick your company. Compare costs and how many you are allowed to rent at once. Also compare available insurance and costs on the rentals.

After you pick a company, you join. Usually you pay per month or per year. This is usually much cheaper than renting if you rent on a regular basis. It doesn’t matter how many you rent because the cost doesn’t go up. Of course, if you only rent one or two a year, it might not be cost efficient unless you are ever late returning those movies. Late fees are usually as much or more as renting the movie was. This is probably the best thing about online DVD rental – there are absolutely no late fees with most of your companies.

When you join a rental club, you make your movie selections ahead of time. The first selections on your list are sent to you first. If you want to keep that movie for a while and watch it over and over again, that is okay. It is never deemed to be late with most of online DVD rental providers. You send your first selections back whenever you decide to. After the company gets those selections back, they send the next selections on your list to you.

For those people who don’t like getting online very often, this selection procedure can be a real plus. You can make your selections way in advance and only get back online after you have gotten through your entire selection list. But you can still get online and change your list before they are sent to you if you change your mind. Just make sure that you give them a day or two of notice so they are sure to have your selections on hand.

Online DVD rental is a better choice as far as selection goes. Online companies usually have a much greater selection of movies than your local movie rental stores do. Also, they are less likely to have all of their new releases checked out when you want them. All in all, online is a pretty good way to go.

If you are like me you love your movies and your music. Some of can remember when we had to choose between cassette tapes and 8 tracks for music and VHS or BETA for video.

Most of us made the switch to DVDs a long time ago as the medium of choice for viewing movies but many people do not care for their DVDs properly. Often the main culprit is just plain and simple dirt and grime. When you start calculating the expense for trying to replace your DVDs, it is a lot smarter to prevent the damage in the first place. In addition you will maintain much better viewing quality for as long as you own the DVD.

It’s important to realize that even though DVDs may seem more impervious to destruction than your old video tapes, they really aren’t and should be treated with similar care. If you will follow some simple rules to care for your DVDs they will last you forever.

So let’s take a look at some tips on how to care for your DVDs.

DO…
Handle discs by their edges only.

Movie is a term that encompasses individual motion pictures, the field of Movie as an art form, and the motion picture industry. Movies are produced by recording images from the world with cameras, or by creating images using animation techniques or special effects.

Movies are cultural artifacts created by specific cultures, which reflect those cultures, and, in turn, affect them. Movie is considered to be an important art form, a source of popular entertainment and a powerful method for educating — or indoctrinating — citizens. The visual elements of cinema gives motion pictures a universal power of communication. Some movies have become popular worldwide attractions by using dubbing or subtitles that translate the dialogue.

Traditional Movies are made up of a series of individual images called frames. When these images are shown rapidly in succession, a viewer has the illusion that motion is occurring. The viewer cannot see the flickering between frames due to an effect known as persistence of vision, whereby the eye retains a visual image for a fraction of a second after the source has been removed. Viewers perceive motion due to a psychological effect called beta movement.

The origin of the name “Movie” comes from the fact that photographic Movie (also called Movie stock) had historically been the primary medium for recording and displaying motion pictures. Many other terms exist for an individual motion picture, including picture, picture show, photo-play, flick, and most commonly, movie. Additional terms for the field in general include the big screen, the silver screen, the cinema, and the movies.

In the 1860s, mechanisms for producing artificially created, two-dimensional images in motion were demonstrated with devices such as the zoetrope and the praxinoscope. These machines were outgrowths of simple optical devices (such as magic lanterns) and would display sequences of still pictures at sufficient speed for the images on the pictures to appear to be moving, a phenomenon called persistence of vision. Naturally, the images needed to be carefully designed to achieve the desired effect — and the underlying principle became the basis for the development of Movie animation.

With the development of celluloid Movie for still photography, it became possible to directly capture objects in motion in real time. Early versions of the technology sometimes required a person to look into a viewing machine to see the pictures which were separate paper prints attached to a drum turned by a handcrank. The pictures were shown at a variable speed of about 5 to 10 pictures per second depending on how rapidly the crank was turned. Some of these machines were coin operated. By the 1880s, the development of the motion picture camera allowed the individual component images to be captured and stored on a single reel, and led quickly to the development of a motion picture projector to shine light through the processed and printed Movie and magnify these “moving picture shows” onto a screen for an entire audience. These reels, so exhibited, came to be known as “motion pictures”. Early motion pictures were static shots that showed an event or action with no editing or other cinematic techniques.
